The Glade garden is finished
Eighteen months of fundraising and a summer of mud. The enclosed garden now opens from all three common rooms, with raised beds at wheelchair height and a loop that always returns you to a door you recognize.
Haldermere Place is a not for profit community of 198 residences on forty acres outside Denmont. People come here for an apartment and stay through whatever comes next, without packing up and moving to another town to find the care they need.
An illustration of the campus. Haldermere Place is a fictional community and these buildings are drawn, not photographed.
Haldermere Place was founded in 1978 by five Denmont families who had each watched a parent move three times in four years. We are a not for profit. There are no shareholders, no entrance fee, and no part of this place that exists to return money to anyone. What comes in goes back into the campus, the team and the Neighbor Fund.
Forty eight years later we are still one campus in one town, and we still answer the telephone ourselves.
You can move between them without leaving the campus, and most people do at some point. Your friends, your dining room and your telephone number stay the same.
One and two bedroom apartments in Birchall House and Thorne Court, with full kitchens, your own front door and a washer and dryer in the unit.
Studio and one bedroom suites in Ridley Wing, with a care team on the floor around the clock and help that scales up or down as things change.
The Glade is a single story household built around one enclosed garden, with twenty four suites and a team trained specifically in dementia care.
Illustrative mock data. Haldermere Place is fictional and every fee, count and building name on this page was invented for this sample.
We are a rental community. You pay a month at a time, you can leave with sixty days of notice, and we do not ask you to hand over a six figure deposit to get in the door. That is the clearest difference between us and the life plan communities in the region.
Walk the campus, eat lunch in the Birchall dining room, meet whoever happens to be around. No appointment is strictly necessary, though it helps.
Our director of health services sits down with you and your family for an hour to work out which level of living actually fits today.
We show you what is open now and what is likely to open within ninety days. If nothing fits, the priority list is free to join.
One month's fee as a deposit, a signed month to month agreement, and our team helps with the move itself.

Not the brochure version. These are the three things residents mention most when somebody new asks them what it is like.
One seating, no reservations, same tables most nights. It is the single thing that keeps people from eating alone, which is the reason most of them moved here.
It loops the pond and it is flat, lit and wide enough for two people and a walker side by side. The 7 AM group has walked it every weekday since 2009.
Woodshop, a kiln and three sewing machines in the lower level of Birchall. Residents run it, residents teach in it, and the key is on a hook by the door.

These are the eight questions we get most often on a first visit, answered the way we would answer them at the kitchen table.
No. Haldermere Place is a rental community. You pay a monthly fee and one month's fee as a deposit when you move in. There is no buy in, no actuarial contract and nothing to refund when you leave.
You move within the campus rather than out of it. Most people start in an apartment in Birchall House or Thorne Court and move to Ridley Wing when daily help becomes the sensible thing. Your mail, your friends and your dining room stay where they are, and we handle the physical move.
We participate in the state and county special assistance program for a limited number of assisted living suites. We do not have skilled nursing on this campus, so Medicare and Medicaid skilled nursing coverage would apply somewhere else rather than here.
Telephone and internet in independent living, personal laundry in assisted living above the weekly allowance, salon services, guest meals and anything a resident buys for themselves. Care levels in assisted living and memory care are priced on top of the residence fee, and we tell you the level before you sign anything.
Talk to us early rather than late. The Neighbor Fund exists for residents who have lived here and outlived their savings through no fault of their own. It is funded by donations and by the community itself. It is not unlimited and we will not pretend otherwise, but no resident has been asked to leave Haldermere Place for inability to pay since the fund was started in 1991.
Usually, yes. Couples can share an apartment in independent living with one spouse receiving assisted living services brought to them. If one of you needs memory care, The Glade is a four minute walk from the Birchall front door and spouses eat there whenever they like.
Yes, in independent living and assisted living, with a weight limit of forty pounds and the expectation that you can care for the animal yourself or arrange for someone who can. There are two resident cats in The Glade who belong to everybody.
It depends entirely on what you want. Two bedroom apartments in Thorne Court have waited as long as fourteen months. Assisted living suites usually open within a few weeks. The priority list costs nothing to join and you can pass on anything you are offered without losing your place.

Started in 1991 after a resident of eleven years outlived her savings and the board decided that was not going to be how her story ended. The fund covers the gap between what a resident can pay and what their care costs, and it is the reason the answer to the question above is the answer it is.
It is also how we fund the dementia support group, which is free and open to anyone in Denmont County whether or not their person lives here.
Drawn monograms, not photographs. These four people are invented for this sample.
Eighteen months of fundraising and a summer of mud. The enclosed garden now opens from all three common rooms, with raised beds at wheelchair height and a loop that always returns you to a door you recognize.
Six two bedroom apartments are expected to come available between January and May. The list is free, and passing on an offer does not cost you your place.
Second and fourth Tuesday, 6:30 PM, in the Birchall lower level. Free and open to anyone in the county. You do not need a connection to Haldermere Place to come.

Weekday tours start at 10 AM and 2 PM and take about ninety minutes, which includes a meal. Bring whoever is helping you decide. We would rather you asked the hard questions on the first visit than the fourth.
